Rethinking the Learning Environment. Built on an undeveloped site, the Clara Barton Elementary School features 30 classrooms in addition to music, science, art, and special education spaces. Transitioning from traditional lecture settings to more fluid and dynamic spaces allows for greater connection and removal of isolated learning. The two-story school is organized around six shared learning communities. Learning pods are located off a circulation spine and clustered in classrooms of five around central learning commons, that operate as secondary breakout spaces. Learning commons support co-teaching, collaborative group work, and even informal individual work. These learning communities are designed to be flexible by allowing each one the flexibility to function for different subjects and grade levels. By providing a variety of adjacent learning spaces, the school supports adaptability and flexibility and encourages students to become thoughtful citizens. The building’s layout creates further connections, with the gymnasium and commons being able to accommodate community gatherings and events. Clara Barton Elementary School inspires connections between people, cultures, and the natural world, creating equity across all spaces within.
